Catch a ferry from Wellington and arrive in Picton by sea, or if you prefer, you can travel from Wellington by air with Sounds Air Travel. This 25 minute flight from Wellington delivers you to Picton's own Koromiko airport. You can choose to be transferred to Picton township for vehicle collection, or simply pick up your backpacker hire car at the airport.
Parking for your backpacker rental car is available on the foreshore close to the Picton museum. This is a good place to start your exploration of the area as it is open 7 days a week, and the helpful staff are more than happy to furnish you with their vast knowledge of the region. Another great attraction on the foreshore is a mini golf course where you can brush up your putting skills and even attempt a hole in 1.
Children and the young at heart will enjoy sailing model boats on the Picton pond. For those keen to find out what's lurking beneath Queen Charlotte Sounds, Picton's Seashore World is a must-see visit. Next to Seahorse World is the Edwin Fox, a fine old wooden ship and a relic of the Crimean war. Here you will find many a local enthusiast able to provide a yarn or two about its past. Picton is quite a historic area, it is still evident that the port of Picton was formerly a Maori settlement, and once you have your rental car the local marae is a short drive away at Waikawa.
Across the bay you can sit atop the old scow Echo and relax with a drink or have a meal. If getting out there is your thing, hire a rental car and take a trip around the wineries or take your hire car to Kaikoura, experience whale watching and be back for the late ferry sailing.
